The intensity of the glow seen above the horizon typically reaches its maximum about 30 minutes before sunrise proper... when the contrast between the day's first rays and the relatively dark earth below and sky above is the highest. This is very evident when skies are clear, but it can also be seen when skies are cloudy, as was the case in the Raleigh area this morning. The bright sunlight above the cloud cover is so intense that it partially penetrates the clouds low in the sky, appearing as a muted but surprisingly colorful glow (better large on black).
